Rolec has added the EVO to its home charging range, and it is one of the more capable units the brand now offers for domestic use. As a Rolec Platinum Installer, we fit Rolec chargers day to day, which gives us a practical view of the EVO rather than a purely technical one.
Choosing a home charger is a decision most people make once, so it is worth understanding what you are getting rather than going on headline price alone.
This article explains what the EVO offers, where it sits in the range, and who it suits best.
What is the Rolec EVO
The Rolec EVO is a compact smart home charger available in 7.4kW single-phase or 22kW three-phase versions. It offers app-controlled scheduling, smart tariff integration and surplus solar charging, along with dynamic load balancing and PME fault detection.
Key features of the EVO
- 7.4kW single-phase or 22kW three-phase charging
- Three ways to operate: mobile app, RFID card or plug and go
- Free Rolec EVO app with scheduling and smart tariff support
- Surplus solar charging with three charging modes
- Dynamic load balancing, with the CT clamp and cable included on single-phase models
- Built-in PME fault detection, no earth rod required
- OCPP 1.6 compliant
- Wi-Fi and Ethernet connectivity, plus 4G on the 22kW model
- IP54 and IK10 rated, corrosion and fire resistant
- UK Smart Charge Point Regulations compliant, including tamper security
- Designed and manufactured in the UK, and a Red Dot design award winner in 2024

Smart control and solar charging
The EVO is managed through the free Rolec EVO app, which lets you set charging schedules and line them up with a smart energy tariff so you are drawing power during the cheapest off-peak windows. For anyone on a time-of-use tariff, that scheduling is where the real running-cost savings come from.
If you have solar panels, the EVO can charge your car from surplus generation. It offers three charging modes through the app. ECO plus uses only surplus solar, so the car charges on energy you would otherwise export cheaply. ECO blends daytime solar with scheduled off-peak grid power overnight. Charge Now simply delivers a full charge on demand. For solar households the ECO plus mode is one of the more compelling features in the range, turning spare generation into miles on the car.
For anyone who prefers not to use the Rolec app, the EVO is OCPP 1.6 compliant, so it can be run through other compatible charge point apps as well.
The five-year warranty
One of the things that stands out about the EVO is that it comes with a five-year manufacturer warranty as standard. That is not an optional extra or an upsell. It is simply what the unit ships with.
Since the government grant for home chargers ended, a three-year guarantee has been the usual benchmark across the industry. A five-year term is therefore noticeably longer than most of the chargers we see, and it tells you something in itself.
A manufacturer only extends its cover when it is confident the hardware will last, and in the EVO’s case that confidence is backed by a modular design and over-the-air software updates that keep the unit current after installation.
Who the Rolec EVO Charger is Perfect For
The EVO is a good match for cost-conscious drivers who want to charge on a smart tariff and keep running costs down, and for solar households looking to put spare generation to use. It also suits homes that expect their needs to grow, as dynamic load balancing keeps charging within the limits of your supply, and where a three-phase supply is available the 22kW model adds speed for higher mileage or a second vehicle.
For most single-EV homes, the 7.4kW model is all that is needed, and its durable build, long warranty and low-maintenance design make it a sensible choice for anyone who wants a charger they can fit and forget.
