Everything You Need To Know About OZEV EV Charger Grant Updates for 2026/27

20 May 2026

The Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) has confirmed a series of changes to its home and workplace EV charger grant schemes, with the majority of updates taking effect from 1 April 2026.

As OZEV-authorised installers, we want to make sure our customers are fully up to speed with what has changed and what it means for them.

Understanding Government EV Charger Grants

If you are thinking about getting an EV charger installed at home or at your business, the UK government offers grants specifically designed to reduce the upfront cost of EV charger installation, and many people are eligible without realising it.

These grants are managed by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles, more commonly referred to as OZEV. As part of the government’s broader push towards net zero, OZEV funds a portion of the installation cost per charging socket, making it significantly cheaper to get set up.

To qualify, both the installer and the equipment used must meet OZEV’s technical standards, and eligibility varies depending on your property type and circumstances.

What Is Changing With Government Grants and Why

The 2026/27 financial year marks the final year of the current OZEV grant schemes, and it is worth understanding why things are changing and what that means for you.

When the grants were first introduced, the EV market was in its early stages, and the range of schemes on offer reflected that, covering a wide variety of property types, landlord categories and business circumstances. As electric vehicle ownership has grown significantly across the UK, the government’s approach to supporting charging infrastructure has evolved alongside it.

The government has streamlined the portfolio, extending five grants while closing three others entirely. The aim is to simplify access to funding and make it easier for both households and businesses to understand what support is available. After 31 March 2027, there is currently no confirmed funding in place, so using what is available now is the most sensible course of action for anyone considering an installation.

Which Grants Are Continuing Until March 2027

Five grants remain open until 31 March 2027. Depending on your situation, one of the following is likely to apply to you.

For people interested in domestic EV Charger installations, the available grants are:

  • The Flats and Renters Grant – For tenants and flat owners who want a charger at their property
  • The Residential Landlord Chargepoint Grant –  For landlords looking to add chargers across their rental properties
  • The Households with On-Street Parking Grant – For homeowners who do not have a driveway or off-street parking

For ChargePoint installations for businesses and organisations, the following remain open:

  • The Workplace Charging Scheme –  For businesses wanting to install chargers for staff or visitors
  • The Workplace Charging Scheme for State-Funded Education Institutions –  For schools, colleges and similar organisations

Which Grants Have Now Closed

Three grants closed to new customer applications on 31 March 2026. These are the Staff and Fleets grant, the Residential Landlord Infrastructure grant and the Commercial Landlord Chargepoint grant. Installers can still submit claims for these grants until 26 May 2026, with any requested resubmissions accepted until 6 July 2026.

New Grant Rates From 1 April 2026

For most of the continuing grants, the maximum funding has increased from £350 to £500 per charging socket from 1 April 2026. This applies to the Flats and Renters Grant, the Residential Landlord Chargepoint Grant, the Households with On-Street Parking Grant and the standard Workplace Charging Scheme.

The one exception is the Workplace Charging Scheme for State-Funded Education Institutions, where the rate has reduced from £2,500 to £2,000 per socket. If your institution already holds a voucher awarded before 1 April 2026, this remains valid at the higher £2,500 rate as long as it is redeemed before 30 September 2026.

In terms of how many sockets you can claim for, individual residents can apply for one socket, landlords can apply for up to 200 sockets across their properties, and businesses can apply for up to 40 sockets across their sites.

Do You Need to Reapply for the Higher Rate

If you already have an approved application for the Flats and Renters Grant or the Residential Landlord Chargepoint Grant, you have the option to reapply from 1 April 2026 to access the increased £500 rate. However, there are some important things to be aware of before doing so.

Reapplying will cancel your existing application entirely, and your new application will be assessed from scratch. Your charger must not be installed before you submit the new application, and installation cannot go ahead until OZEV has confirmed your eligibility, which can take up to 10 working days. We would recommend speaking to us before taking any action so we can advise on whether reapplying makes sense in your specific situation.

For the Workplace Charging Scheme, there is nothing extra you need to do. Any installation completed from 1 April 2026 automatically qualifies for the higher £500 rate.

New Evidence Requirements

OZEV has introduced new evidencing requirements for the Flats and Renters grant and the Residential Landlord Chargepoint grant, applying to applications and claims submitted from 1 April 2026. All applicants on both schemes must also supply a dated quote from their installer.

For the Flats and Renters grant, customers must provide written permission from their landlord, freeholder or property manager, a utility bill showing their name and the installation address, and a copy of their tenancy agreement if renting. Residential landlords will need a verification document depending on their landlord type, such as a Land Registry Title, a rental property insurance policy or proof of appointment to a Residents’ Management Company.

Installers must now include a close-up photo of the installed charge point, a photo showing the model and serial number, a photo showing the charge point alongside its associated parking space, and a wide-angle photo of the building where the charge point has been installed.
