More businesses than ever are installing EV charging points for staff, fleet vehicles, customers and visitors. What often gets less attention is what happens after installation. A charger that isn’t serviced regularly is more likely to fail, more likely to create a safety risk, and more likely to leave a business exposed when something does go wrong.
For commercial property owners and facilities managers, ChargePoint servicing and maintenance shouldn’t be treated as an optional extra. It’s a core part of keeping charging infrastructure safe, compliant and available for the people who rely on it every day.
Commercial chargers work harder than Domestic Chargers
A charger on a driveway might be used once a day. A charger in a staff car park, retail site or fleet depot could be used dozens of times a week by different drivers, different vehicles and different charging behaviours.
That higher volume of use means more wear on connectors, more strain on internal components, and more opportunities for small faults to develop. Left unchecked, those faults tend to surface at the worst possible moment, whether that’s a fleet vehicle that can’t charge overnight or a customer charger that’s out of action during a busy period.
Safety is the main reason servicing matters
An EV charger is a piece of electrical equipment carrying a sustained, high-current load, often for hours at a time. Regular servicing exists primarily to catch the things that aren’t visible from the outside.
A professional service typically includes:
- A visual inspection of the unit and its surroundings
- RCD trip testing to confirm the device protects against electrical faults
- Earth loop impedance testing to check the earthing is safe
- Checking internal and switchgear connections are tight and not overheating
- A written report confirming the outcome of the checks
None of this is about ticking a box. Loose connections and overheating components are among the most common causes of charger failure and, in rare cases, fire risk. Catching these issues early is what regular servicing is designed to do.
Compliance and warranty obligations
Commercial charging points are usually installed under BS 7671 Section 722, and many businesses will have received funding through schemes such as the Workplace Charging Scheme. Both come with ongoing responsibilities, not just a one-off installation certificate.
Manufacturer warranties often specify that the charger must be serviced at set intervals to remain valid. Skipping a service could mean a business is left covering the full cost of a repair that would otherwise have been covered. For businesses managing employer liability and health and safety obligations, being able to show a documented service history also matters if a charger is ever involved in an incident or an insurance claim.
Keeping chargers available when people need them
For a business, downtime on a charger isn’t just inconvenient. A fleet operator with a charger out of action might have a vehicle that can’t be used the next morning. A retail or hospitality site with a broken charger risks a poor experience for visiting customers who chose that location expecting to charge.
Regular servicing reduces the likelihood of unplanned breakdowns by identifying wear and minor faults before they become failures. It’s a far more predictable and controllable approach than reacting to a charger that has already stopped working.
How often should commercial chargers be serviced?
An annual service is generally recommended as a minimum, alongside any manufacturer-specific requirements. Sites with particularly high usage, such as fleet depots or multi bay car parks, may benefit from more frequent checks, especially where several chargers are running near constant cycles throughout the week.
Servicing your commercial EV chargers
Regular servicing protects the safety of everyone using a charging point, supports compliance with regulations and warranty terms, and keeps chargers available when a business needs them most. It’s a small, predictable cost set against the risk and expense of an unplanned failure.
As an OZEV authorised installer, we provide comprehensive servicing for commercial EV chargers across Greater Manchester, Cheshire and Derbyshire, covering fleet operators, retail sites, workplaces and other commercial premises.
