How to beat the heat in your EV this summer

13 July 2022

Summer is in full swing and as the temperatures start to heat up, one thing you’ll need to consider is how to best maintain your electric vehicle.

Now, with charging points available to install at home, there has never been an easier time to go electric. With the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS), you can benefit from £350 off the cost of the installation of your chargePoint.

Not only this, but by installing a Rolec WallPod and monitoring your charging analytics via the app, you can clearly see where you’re saving money on electric miles travelled. Your WallPod: EV smart home charger will also have a three-year warranty guarantee included for free.

In this blog, we’ve rounded up the key tips you need to know about so you can beat the heat in your EV this summer and have a smooth drive:

1.Don’t forget to precondition

Preconditioning can come in handy when you’re looking to stay cool during the summer months. While you’re still plugged into your EV home charger, you can set the temperature to cool before you get at the wheel to ensure your electric vehicle’s battery won’t overheat.

The preconditioning device will adjust the temperature inside your vehicle without causing any battery pressure. In addition, it will be a great replacement for the air conditioning, as it typically requires a lot of energy to keep it going during your drive.

Once you drive off and complete your journey, try to get a parking spot in the shade to avoid the need to turn the air conditioning on when you come back.

2. Use eco-mode driving

The eco-mode is designed to help reduce your energy and increase your efficiency whilst on the road. During hot climates, you can turn to eco-mode driving to boost your efficiency and limit the power needed for accelerating.

3. Don’t turn to fast charging

When it comes to preserving your EV’s battery, you should avoid fast charging as that can cause the system to overheat. It’s indicated to avoid fast charging at the hottest time of the days, between 12-2pm, and instead to aim for 80% charge as that will make your car battery more efficient.

4. Keep only the essential applications on

The fewer applications you have on, the more efficient your electric vehicle will be.

To avoid consuming all your EV’s battery and to improve performance, we recommend switching off any external applications that you are not using during your journey, such as your AC system.

5. Clean your car

If you want to improve your EV range, one thing to look out for is decreasing the weight load in your boot. Get rid of any unnecessary luggage and make sure you travel only with your essentials.

Having a summer clean will come in handy before starting your next journey and it will improve your electric vehicle’s performance.
